Easy Way to Hear Your Needs

Often, in our busy lives, we get stuck in stress and mental loops. We push ourselves to be better – a better person, partner, employee, parent, or even a pet owner. In this race, there’s a risk of losing touch with our needs and desires. Not the big 5-year goals, but our needs TODAY.

Here’s a simple tool to reconnect with your needs right now. It’s a variation of “guided fantasy”:

  • Sit back. Close your eyes and focus on a single point. Breathe and direct attention to your body. Imagine you went to sleep this evening, and overnight magic happened: you wake up in your ideal life scenario, and all your challenges are magically resolved.
  • How does it feel? What do you notice in yourself? What do you see? Are there any smells, colors, sensations? what do you think? What are you doing? What and who is around? What do you think and feel about yourself in that ideal life?

Your ideal life fantasy might help you become aware of some deepest needs and desires. It may highlight what’s missing. It may show you direction or a clear first step.

We need energy and connection to our core values and desires to keep going. It’s important to BE in the process of progressing on your goals not in a panic or battle state, but in a generative and balanced state. It doesn’t mean you’d always be light and joyful. It means you’d feel steady and safe enough to welcome and endure every state or period you’re going through.
